Superlative merupakan jenis kata sifat yang berfungsi membandingkan tiga atau lebih benda atau orang dalam satu kelompok sehingga diperoleh yang paling atau ter-.
Superlative memiliki dua penanda yang berarti paling/ter- yaitu -est/-st dan most.
Contoh:
- What is the most famous river in the world?
- You are the best.
- I think it's the worst show I've ever seen.
Dari ketiga contoh di atas dapat dilihat bahwa superlatif ini memiliki tiga varian bentuk, antara lain:
- the + superlative - What is the most famous river in the world?
- superlative + adverb (tanpa noun) - You're the best.
- superlative + I've ever - I think it's the worst show I've ever seen.
Superlatif dengan tambahan -est di belakang kata sifat bersuku kata satu.
- easiest
- tallest
- shortest
- longest
- oldest
- youngest
- biggest
- smallest, etc.
Superlatif dengan most di depat kata sifat bersuku kata lebih dari satu.
- most important
- most expensive
- most careful
- most interesting
- most wonderful
- most beneficial
- most dangerous
- most exclusive, etc.
Irregular superlative
- good → best
- bad → worst
- little/less → least
- far → furthest
