If I have much money,	I will buy a new car.	First conditional (I)
If I had much money,	I would buy a new car.	Second conditional (II)
If I had had much money,	I would have bought a new car.	Third conditional (III)

Berdasarkan contoh-contoh di atas, dapat diketahui bahwa conditional sentence adalah kalimat yang menginformasikan sesuatu diharapkan/diimpikan terjadi namun sebenarnya tidak terjadi.

Ketiga contoh conditional sentence di atas dapat dirumuskan sebagai berikut:

Karakteristik Conditional Sentence

First conditional (I)

Sifat : Kondisi terbuka, apa yang dikatakan masih mungkin terjadi.

Waktu : Kondisi ini mengacu pada waktu sekarang atau masa depan.

Contoh: If my father knows about this, I am in serious trouble.

Second conditional (II)

Sifat : tidak nyata atau situasi yang dikatakan tidak mungkin terjadi.

Waktu : mengacu pada waktu sekarang, menggunakan tenses lampau, namun yang dibicarakan tentang situasi sekarang.

Contoh: If I knew his name, I would tell you.

Third conditional (III)

Sifat : tidak nyata

Waktu : Mengacu pada masa lampau sehingga apa yang kita bicarakan dulu tidak pernah terjadi.

Contoh: If you had warned me, I would have told the truth. 

INGAT!

• Dalam konstruksi kalimat conditional 'will' dan 'would' tidak lazim digunakan dalam if-clause 'will' dan 'would' digunakan dalam main clause. 'will' dan 'would' dapat digunakan dalam if-clause jika mengindikasikan keinginan. Contoh : If you will come this way, the manager will see you now. 
• Pada kalimat conditional II, were menggantikan was. Contoh : If were a rich woman, ...
• Setelah if, dapat diikuti oleh someone, somewhere, anyone, atau anywhere.
• Untuk mengindikasikan if not dapat digunakan unless.
• Terdapat mixed type of conditional sentence (konstruksi campuran). If + past perfect - would + infinitive. Contoh : If you had warned me, I would not be in prison.
